Unlike some other insect pests, wasps and bees do not directly prey on or scavenge from humans or spread infectious diseases. If the wasps believe that their nest or young are being attacked, they may go into a painful, venomous stinging frenzy. Wasp stings most often result in painful swelling and itching, which can be dangerous or scary to young children in particular. In rare cases, wasp stings may also result in a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.
